I watched a Sunday Square Off with Brahm Resnick several Sunday’s ago and when speaking of prop 123 Sen. Peterson (I’m 99% sure it was him) told Resnick that $300m funds were already in the budget so not to worry about the prop.123. Resnick looked skeptical but was assured several times. I wanted to check but did not know how to find that line item in a state budget One more comment on teacher salaries and where money should be allotted.. Teachers need, councilors, nurses, librarians, office staff, custodians and so much more to do their jobs; to teach kids. Here’s an extra $4k now do it all. Teachers still won’t come and certainly won’t stay. Superintendent “bloated pay” believe me, it’s what the market will bear. Finding a good super is not cheap.
You can find the General Fund backfill for lower post-Prop 123 state land trust distributions on page 181 of the FY 2026 JLBC Baseline Book.
It’s under the “Endowment Earnings Distribution Decrease” header and says “The baseline includes an increase of $285,626,000 from the General Fund…consistent with the 3-year spending plan associated with the enacted FY 2025 budget, which assumed the General Fund would backfill reduced endowment earnings for Basic State Aid in FY 2026…”
The state budget for next year has not passed yet, but the baseline book shows funding that is assumed to continue/essentially the starting point in budget negotiations for the Legislature.
