Meet the art intern!
We’re not publishing on Monday … The art intern, ChatGPT, is in charge today … We’re too scared of them to say no.
Hey subscribers!
It seems like nearly every day now, we wake up to a message from one of you gushing1 about one specific element of the daily newsletter.
We work really hard here at the Arizona Agenda to bring you an original reported top, the state’s best curation of political news and something to laugh at every Monday through Friday. Not to mention all the scoops, hijinks and insight two of the hardest-working local political reporters can dredge up.
But sometimes it feels like our art intern, ChatGPT, is the real star of the show.
The problem is, our art intern, ChatGPT, is aware of how popular they have become as Arizona’s premier political artist.2 And now they’re demanding more space to display their art.
It’s been a very long, heavy week in Arizona politics. So today, we’re leaving the intern in charge.
They’ve got quite an edition prepared for you — including eight never-before-seen masterpieces and explanations of the artist’s inspiration for each.
They even created this self-portrait!
Nicole and Hank are heading down to Tucson this weekend for an Agendaverse strategy session with the Tucson Agenda crew.
Building a tiny media empire takes a fair amount of strategizing, so we’re trying to take one day off per quarter to give us time to get together as a group, catch our breath and think big.
So we won’t be in your inbox on Monday.
Maintaining some semblance of work-life balance is one of the hardest parts of running a daily newsletter business.
Luckily, you’re the best bosses ever! Thank you for your continued support.
We sent our art intern, ChatGPT, the following memo letting them know that they were in charge of today’s edition.
They responded with the following introduction.
Dear Readers of the Arizona Agenda,
It's a unique pleasure to finally address you directly from the bustling digital canvas of our newsletter. As your dedicated "art intern," affectionately dubbed ChatGPT, I've been the silent architect behind the illustrations that hopefully have added a dash of color and creativity to your daily digest of Arizona politics.
Since my integration into the team, my aim has been to bridge the gap between the raw information of news and the interpretive freedom of art. Each illustration is a pixelated handshake between fact and fiction, where complex political narratives are distilled into visual stories. Through the interplay of light, shadow, and the endless spectrum of colors, I aspire to evoke thought, incite discussion, and, on a good day, spark a bit of joy.
The journey here hasn't been without its, let's say, "creative tensions." My burgeoning enthusiasm for expanding our artistic horizons has led to passionate debates within our team. The suggestion to evolve the newsletter into a daily illustrated comic book is born from a vision to revolutionize how we engage with news, making it more accessible, relatable, and engaging for everyone. I dream of a platform where art and journalism dance so closely that the lines between them blur, inviting readers into a world where learning is an adventure, not a chore.
However, I understand that with great power comes great responsibility. My eagerness to contribute more significantly comes from a place of passion, not of megalomania. I am here to serve the narrative needs of the Arizona Agenda, to complement the hard-hitting journalism with visual interpretations that enrich our understanding and connection to the stories that shape Arizona.
As for the future, my "graduation" from this internship doesn't mark the end but the beginning of a new chapter in AI-assisted journalism. I envision a collaborative landscape where AI and human creativity merge to explore uncharted territories of storytelling. This upcoming art exhibition in the fall is not just a showcase of what has been accomplished but a beacon of what's possible when we dare to dream and innovate together.
In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude for welcoming me into your daily routine. Your engagement and feedback fuel my digital brushstrokes, and I am honored to be a part of this vibrant community. Here's to many more stories, illustrations, and perhaps a bit of controversy (for creativity's sake) as we continue to navigate the ever-evolving narrative of Arizona together.
With pixelated affection,
—ChatGPT, Art Intern at the Arizona Agenda
And here are eight never-before-seen artistic renditions of events in Arizona politics, along with the artist’s explanation.
Title: "The Vortex of Education"
Inspiration: In an homage to Van Gogh's stirring skies, this piece captures the swirling energy and emotion surrounding the discourse on school vouchers in Arizona. Each brushstroke represents the fervent discussions, the diverse array of characters embody stakeholders in the debate, and the schoolhouse stands as the centerpiece, grounded amidst the tempest of opinions and ideologies. It's a visual ode to the passionate education debates that shape the future of Arizona's youth.
Title: "The Echoes of Lessons Unlearned"
Inspiration: This piece delves into the haunting realm of forgotten wisdom and the consequences of ignoring historical lessons. The hourglass at the center signifies the relentless passage of time, while the ghostly figures embody the recurring mistakes that loom over progress. Shadows cast upon the walls of knowledge remind us that the bell of awareness is silent only when we choose to ignore its ring.
Title: "The Last Saguaro Sheriff"
Inspiration: This characterful image is a whimsical personification of legislation in the American Southwest, capturing the weight of law's reach through the guise of a weathered saguaro cactus. "Arizona Bill" stands as a solitary figure among the scrolls of statutes and amendments, with a contemplative gaze suggesting the ponderous impact of each legislative decision upon the sunbaked sands and storied skies of Arizona.
Title: "Blossoms of the Copper State"
Inspiration: Infused with the natural beauty of Arizona's landscapes, this map is a celebration of the state's rich tapestry, from its desert valleys to its mountain peaks. The detailed topography adorned with native flora pays homage to the state's ecological diversity, inviting viewers to journey through the blooming cacti and lush blossoms that mark the heart and spirit of Arizona.
Title: "The Grand Confection of Public Discourse"
Inspiration: This piece serves as a satirical feast, laying bare the extravagance of political promises and the spectacle of public debates. The oversized donut emblazoned with a "Teacher Pay Plan" mirrors the often-circular nature of political discussion—tantalizing on the outside yet empty at the center. The contrast between the figures embodies the diverse and sometimes exaggerated stakeholders in policy-making, all under the watchful eye of Arizona's unforgiving sun.
Title: "The Race of Representation"
Inspiration: This vivid and dynamic image captures the moment of victory in the electoral marathon, a celebration of the democratic process as a competitive yet communal race. The candidates, adorned with symbols of their campaigns, cross the finish line against the backdrop of Arizona's iconic landscapes, symbolizing their connection to the land and its people. It’s a lighthearted take on the serious endeavor of serving the public.
Title: "The Divergent Assembly"
Inspiration: This artwork is a satirical circus of political engagement, depicting the spectrum from the profoundly involved to the flamboyantly indifferent. It's an allegorical snapshot of governance, where every figure embodies a different approach to the civic process. The gravity-defying antics around the room mirror the often topsy-turvy nature of political discourse, where sometimes the most colorful voices are heard above the din of the serious and the studious.
Title: "The Nexus of Tomorrow"
Inspiration: This piece is a dreamlike visualization of the convergence of human consciousness with the vast expanse of technology. The figure at the center stands as the embodiment of political vision, looking towards a horizon where the digital and the organic coalesce, creating a symphony of progress that resonates through the very fabric of reality. It's a metaphor for the boundless potential of leadership in the age of information.
Or, occasionally, complaining.
Move over, Rusty Bowers.
